Dash Cam FAQs
Q: How many driving hours will an SD card record?
A: The Camera comes with a 256GB micro SD memory card of which up to 60 hours of driving time video will be captured at the highest resolution (‘Standard’ setting) while the vehicle is engine on. This can be extended to 90 hours (‘Balanced’ setting) or 115 hours (‘Extended’ setting) by reducing video quality if required. Once the card is full, it will automatically overwrite the oldest 5 minute file(s) for the enabled camera(s). If both cameras are enabled, the dash cam will record 60 hours of 1080p (HD) video. If only the road-facing camera is enabled, the dash cam will record 120 hours of 1080p (HD) video.
Q: Is the Dash Camera always on?
A: When connected to the vehicle’s OBD or J1939 diagnostic port, the Camera will be powered by the vehicle’s battery whether the vehicle is driving or parked.
Q: Does the Dash Camera record audio?
A: The Camera can record audio, and it is incumbent upon you as the fleet operator to understand the rules related to audio capture for the jurisdiction(s) in which you operate. Each dash cam is configurable to enable or disable audio recording.
Q: How do I install the Dash Camera?
A: The Camera is a plug and play solution. It is shipped with all required accessories for installation in a light/medium duty vehicle with a 16-pin OBDII port. An 8ft cable connecting the Camera to the vehicle’s OBD port is included. Adapter cables are required for J1939 vehicles or 2-Wire installation. The Camera also includes a universal mount that can be used to install the device on the windshield or the dashboard of the vehicle.
Q: Where should the Dash Camera be placed in a vehicle?
A: The Camera can be installed on the dashboard or on the windshield based upon your preference. If installed in the driver’s field of view, it can serve as a head’s up display, providing real-time information including speed, fuel level and even direction of travel. The adhesive at the base of the universal mount will not leave any residue when removed. Two additional adhesives are provided should you need to relocate the device or move to another vehicle.
Q: Does the camera drain my vehicle’s battery?
A: The Camera is always monitoring your vehicle’s battery and will automatically shut itself down if it detects that the vehicle battery voltage falls below 11.9VDC for more than 5 minutes. This ensures that the Camera will not drain your vehicle battery when parked for extended periods of time.
Q: How long are dash cam clips available?
A: Any images or video that are captured by the Camera and uploaded to the cloud will remain available for no less than 13-months as long as the images or video is still stored on the camera’s SD card.
Q: Can the camera be road-facing only?
A: The Camera allows you to disable the cabin-facing camera so that images and video are only captured for the road-facing camera. Please note that if you disable the cabin-facing camera, features including Driver ID and Cellphone detection will not be available.
Q: Can the dash camera record audio?
A: The Camera can record audio, and it is incumbent upon you as the fleet operator to understand the rules related to audio capture for the jurisdiction(s) in which you operate. You have the option to enable or disable audio via device settings.
Q: Does the dash camera support live streaming?
A: The Camera does support both live and historic streaming. Note that these features are designed to provide a real-time viewing experience and will prioritize video presentation over video quality depending upon the strength of the cellular data connection. For the highest quality video, you can request this via the History tab or via the SD card itself.
Q: Does the dash camera offer any driver coaching features?
A: The Camera can provide your drivers with audible and visual notifications for speeding and cellphone usage events when they are detected, serving to assist the driver in complying with rules of the road and company policies. Any risky driving footage can be saved and reviewed with drivers afterwards.
Q: How can I address concerns from drivers who are uncomfortable with the idea of being recorded?
A: Commercial vehicles are considered an extension of the workplace and it is therefore typically permissible to capture video of the vehicle cabin in the same way that you may do so in your office or warehouse. To address concerns that drivers may have in this regard, you may choose to:
-
-
- Advise that in many instances, having cabin facing footage can exonerate the driver in the event of an accident
- Explain the situations and conditions where such video may be accessed and by whom
- Provide the driver with a privacy slide (webcam cover) that can be closed to cover the cabin-facing camera when privacy is required
- Choose to disable the cabin camera as a matter of policy in which case an icon showing that the camera is disabled will be displayed on the LCD screen of the Camera
-
Q: What are the advantages of choosing a connected dash camera over a traditional dash camera?
A: Traditional dash cameras, where video is only captured locally to a memory card and must be manually retrieved, may be appropriate for individuals or very small businesses where the vehicle is typically driven by the owner or their family. For companies operating more than one vehicle being driven by employees, the LTE connected Camera can provide enhanced visibility into your fleet operations, allowing you as the business owner to verify the safety and security of the vehicle and its occupants and contents from the convenience of your office or smartphone. Being able to discreetly investigate incidents in real-time or historically with the benefit of video delivered OTA can improve safety, peace-of-mind and operational efficiencies in ways that a traditional dash camera cannot.
