What Matters When You’re Comparing Cargo Trailers

If you’re a contractor, landscaper, or field service company, your enclosed trailers are basically rolling job boxes. The shiny diamond plate accents look nice, but here’s what to look for when buying a new one:

Frame & box construction

    • Choose between tube steel (strongest, heaviest), all-aluminum (lightweight & expensive), or hybrid (steel frame aluminum skin) based on your needs for strength, rustproofing, and cost.

    • Look for full-tube frames, decent crossmember spacing (16 inches on center or 12 for heavy duty), and real welds holding everything together.

Pro Tip: Slide under the trailer and look at the frame from below.

Floor, walls, and roof

    • 3/4″ plywood floors (consider pressure treated or even doubling up the 3/4 ply as an upgrade) and at least 3/8″ walls.

    • One-piece roof or high-quality sealed seams to keep water out.

Axles, GVWR, and payload

    • Tandem 5k–7k torsion axles (smoother ride, harder to service, more $) or tandem spring axles (rougher ride, more moving parts, easier to service) for most work trailers.

    • Don’t just look at size (7×16). Consider what you’re actually hauling.

    • Hauling capacity = GVWR minus the trailer’s curb (empty) weight.

    • Do not exceed the payload capacity. That’s a safety issue, not a suggestion.

Doors & layout

    • For mowers and heavy, wheeled equipment, a ramp door is generally more practical.
    • Barn doors with a portable ramp are better if you work in tight spaces or need better weather sealing.
    • Think about side door placement, ladder racks, cabinets, and workbench space if you’re using it as a mobile shop.

Rust protection

    • All-aluminum (Legend, Featherlite, ATC, Sundowner) = no rust, higher price.

    • Steel brands (Rock Solid, Delco, Homesteader, Haulmark) need decent undercoating and regular wash-downs.

Fit, finish & wiring

    • Look for protected wiring (not dangling) and LED lights.

    • You want decent hardware that won’t break with constant use.

    • Look at the small stuff that shows it was built with quality and pride.

Dealer network & support

    • You want parts and service nearby so you can get what you need quickly.

    • Read reviews and make sure the manufacturer actually stands behind their product. Talk is cheap.

Available options that matter to working fleets

    • Ladder racks, roof walk, interior shelving, E-track, extra height, heavier floors, and contractor “packages” that are all planned for you.
